The Journey Begins

Heavy provisioning before starting our cruise

Time moves…in such a way that it’s hard to hold onto firmly. You dream. You work. Before you realize it your dream is about to come into fruition.

We are on the cusp, days away from starting a new life. It’s hard to wrap my mind around the fact that in a few short days our lives will consist of constantly traveling, always  and ever moving onward. Our dream to see places and experience cultures few take the time to understand or appreciate is almost ours. We will exist in a world built for settling and settlers, people whom if traveled, travel back to a home. We will come, we will see, and we will continue on with our home firmly secured to our back.

Time has slipped our grasp. Once, we were working on our thru-hulls, living in conditions that made our small home seem even smaller. Since then, countless boat projects later, we’ve decided to start a family, had our first child, and continued the grind for making our home a safe and sea-worthy home.

Now as we hold hands, through those forests and along those beaches, guiding safely through those crowds and watching moonrises over a black endless sea, we hold another pair of hands, much smaller, and whispering to him to hear the world, to see it with love and compassion, with interest and confusion, with wonder and awe

Our child has added another dimension to our dreams. Once it was just our dream, to hold hands and walk white sand beaches, travel through rough jungles and cold forests, escape into the blur of crowds and seek the solitude of days of open ocean sailing. Now as we hold hands, through those forests and along those beaches, guiding safely through those crowds and watching moonrises over a black endless sea, we hold another pair of hands, much smaller, and whispering to him to hear the world, to see it with love and compassion, with interest and confusion, with wonder and awe. Our lives and our dreams do not end with the responsibility of raising a child, it is enhanced and made a bit more interesting to navigate. It has become our responsibility to raise someone how we best see fit, and the best way is the way that we desire to live, to be the best people we know how to be.

There are many things I look forward to in our future, but I hesitate to speculate exactly how things will go.

We have rebuilt our boat, put money in it I never thought I’d have in my lifetime, put care and pride into every corner touched, making it ours through and through.

Although time has somehow fast-forwarded to our departure date being mere days away, our dream is only just beginning. We’ve reached our goal of having a vessel that can sail the seven seas, now it’s onward to see the world for decades to come.

  1. I couldn’t be happier for the three of you. I think back on ALL the conversations about your dream to start this life (Travis). Then you found a partner who not only wanted to join you, but challenged you to do it better. Then there was the beautiful day you both welcomed Rowan into this world, and had those additional hands to hold through rough seas and calm. You’ve worked hard, you’ve adapted, you’ve been stubborn in the best way, and, most importantly, you’ve loved and shared along the way. My heart is with with you all on your journey.
